JTI Vietnam runs a community investment program focused on the housing needs of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in rural areas. This initiative aims to develop the standard technical manual for the housing design features that cater to PWDs.
To facilitate its adoption and replication, the resulting instructional guide will be disseminated to various entities involved in the housing solutions for PWDs in rural areas which include the local government, local masons, construction contractors and the network of disability people organizations (DPOs).
This unique endeavor, launched in 2020 in partnership with Habitat for Humanity and GreenViet (a sustainable construction expert agency), addresses a PWD need that is not often prioritised. Usually, the focus is on PWDs’ medical and social needs or disability policies. Whether the PWD has a house that is accessible and promotes independent living is often overlooked.
For three years, until 2022, JTI Vietnam will apply the standard technical manual in building six pilot houses for PWDs facing mobility challenges in Tien Giang and Hoa Binh provinces.
